Video game reviews: The Sims (PC)

When I was little I heard people talk about the Sims and how awesome they were. Everyone loved the Sims. As they got older there were more expansion packs that came out as well as the Sims 2. There are even Sims for video game consoles, not just the PC. I didn’t think much about it until I finally purchased the Sims for my computer a couple years ago. I was a bit behind on the trend, but I thought I would give it a try. I was hooked. Three years later I now own all the Sims expansion packs and this has become, without a doubt, my favorite computer game of all time.

The greatest part about the Sims is that you can control other people’s lives. Depending on who the player is really determines why this is such a great thing. I know some people that get great joy out of turning off the Sims’ free will and drowning them, or removing all the doors in a room and setting them on fire. I also decided I should watch my back around those people. But my love of the Sims is because there’s something awesome about creating a life with no consequences. I can be a millionaire one day, a criminal the next, or just completely ruin everyone else’s lives and sit there laughing. And none of it’s real. If I murdered everyone and bulldozed their houses, it wouldn’t hurt me any because they’re just pixels on the screen.

There are simply too many elements of this game to cover individually, so I’ll point out some of my favorite parts of the Sims. I really like the fact that Sims can get married and have babies. I love making little baby rooms with the crib and all that, and then demolishing in for a kid’s room as they get older. It’s like playing life in fast forward. I like the fact that Sims can get married as well, but I don’t like that they have to live in different houses. I always forget and put my Sims in the same house. Then I have to delete them and start over because I suppose the whole point of them getting married is for them to move into the man’s house. My second favorite part is decorating the houses. There are so many different choices. I’ve spent hours just building a Sims’ house. I used a cheat code for more money once, and built a giant Sim mansion. I spent five hours on it, and it’s still only half done.

While the Sims are fun to play, heed the warning label. It is for teens, and it’s not very appropriate for younger children. There are some elements of the game that are for older players. Getting married, having kids, and making out is all more grown up stuff. Today many people still find the Sims to be a lot of fun, so don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s simply for kids and miss the chance to play a great game.
